Mall outreach

We conduct Outreach in Chatswood, Hornsby and Warringah Malls on Thursday evenings. This is an opportunity to meet young people "on their turf". It's also a great chance to get to know them and to let them know about the services available at StreetWork. There's the opportunity to be on a roster once a fortnight or month (depending on your availability).

Advocacy

This involves responding to any after-hours phone calls received. Volunteers are also required to attend Chatswood, Dee Why or North Sydney Police stations if there’s a young person in custody who requires a Support Person. Advocates are placed on a monthly roster during the week or on the weekend, depending on your availability.

Mentoring

This involves meeting with a young person 1-to-1, building a relationship and helping them to achieve their goals. Volunteer Mentors will be assigned a young person based on level of assistance needed, personality factors and area (ie. North Shore, Northern Beaches or Hornsby). As StreetWork is a Christian organisation, all mentors (staff and volunteers alike) are required to be active Christians to provide a consistent message to our young people.

Programs

StreetWork runs a number of skill-building programs including parent support, aerosol art, hip-hop dance, gym and fitness. Volunteers are welcome to help in these areas and are welcome to suggest other subjects that may be of interest to our young people.

Events

There are numerous events throughout the year that require people to help to set-up, pack away, man stalls etc. These events include: Annual Dinner, Supporters Breakfast, BBQ's, Spring Fair, Carols by Candlelight...just to name a few.

Office Administration and Support

There are a number of important tasks including managing our support lines, fund raising, IT, web and content management, book keeping- accounting, filing and office administration that require skilled people to help to ensure StreetWork remains one of the most efficient and effective youth organisations; please email us at info@streetwork.org.au providing details of your time available, skills and experience and we will be in touch.

Steps involved in becoming a volunteer

  1. Contact the office at info@streetwork.org.au to make an enquiry and if you can send us a CV highlighting your experience this will allow us to match you with available opportunities. Please be sure to clarify the available days and hours too. (Mon-Fri between 10am-6pm are our core operating hours).
  2. Meet with a staff member to find out more about volunteering with StreetWork and the area of volunteering that interests you. The staff member will inform you of the vacancies available.
  3. Participate in a 3 month on-the-Job training program in your area of interest (if available) with a member of staff. This is also a probation period. If you're interested in becoming a Volunteer Mentor, it's required that you participate in Mall Outreach during the probation period as part of the training.
