Our Youth Workers
Jenny Grindell, Executive Officer Jenny has an extensive background in senior executive roles in multinational organisations. She was a national director for the Zurich Group as well as Ernst & Young Australia and later headed up a change management consulting arm for E & Y in Hong Kong. Since repatriation Jenny has worked for those in need in our community. She was one of the founding members of Woodbury Autism Education and Research, Australia’s only Applied Behaviour Analysis school for children with autism, and was CEO for an expanding disability advocacy organisation prior to joining StreetWork.
Garth Hughes, Youth Services Manager Garth has been involved with StreetWork for almost 10 years as both a volunteer and worker. Before he joined us, Garth worked with SWIM, a youth outreach program which operated in Manly. Garth is our Youth Services Manager and Kickstart Coordinator. He also manages a caseload of clients as a senior youth worker. Garth was born and bred on the Northern Beaches and this geographical area of Sydney remains close to his heart.
Nancy has a background in design and photography but has been working with young people for over 5 years now. Nancy has worked at youth centres and in a juvenile detention centre. She started volunteering with StreetWork at the start of 2006 and began full time work with StreetWork that November. Nancy has a caseload of clients and uses her creative background to contribute to StreetWork’s marketing and promotional material. Richard has been working in community services for 6 years both in a paid and a volunteer capacity. He has worked with a wide range of high needs clients with complex and challenging behaviours, provided disability services, developed case plans, provided behaviour support through mentoring and respite care and crisis refuge work. Richard has worked in intensive residential settings, outreach settings and supervised staff. Richard coordinates the Mall Worker Program and manages a caseload of clients.
Penny Taber, Youth Case Worker Penny has a background in theatre and psychology and has been involved in youth ministry for over 9 years. Prior to joining StreetWork Penny was working with the Disability Employment Network. Penny coordinates a drama program at a local behaviour management school and also manages a caseload of clients. Penny is passionate about getting young people involved in creative arts, helping them find work and thinks teenagers are awesome ‘cause they tell it how it is! Streetwork provides 4 main services to young people:

Kickstart - 1:1 Mentoring Programme
Kickstart is our most requested service. It is contract based, goal focused intensive case management. Our Youth workers determine areas of change with the young person and support them through the process by positive affirmation and reinforcement. Goals are individually tailored according to the needs of the young person and may include assistance with legal issues, counseling, education, employment, housing, alcohol and substance abuse and relational issues.
Parent Support
StreetWork provides support to the immediate families of our young clientele. Parent / Carer Support includes a social group which conducts informal get togethers as well as educative guest presenters and strategy development through consultation with our Youth Case Workers.Other useful telephone numbers: Legal Aid: 1800 10 18 10
