WENONA AMNESTY SLEEPOUT | StreetWork

Wenona Amnesty Sleepout raised awareness for youth homelessness. StreetWork joined students for outreach activities supporting vulnerable youth.

Shining a light on youth homelessness, this year’s Wenona School ‘Amnesty Sleepout’ saw over 60 Wenona students sleeping on pieces of cardboard in the school’s gym for a one-night sleepout. Against a general theme of ‘service learning’, Streetwork were one of 3 or 4 charities on hand to also give the students a first-hand experience of some of the daily outreach activities we engage in to build trust in our relationships with the young people we support. Graffiti-writing and songwriting activities were interspersed with some key learnings about how Streetwork goes about turning young lives around. Many of the young people we work with have experienced or are enduring homelessness themselves, so it was fitting that monies raised by the event went directly to Taldumande Youth Services, one of many Sydney-based agencies that support vulnerable and homeless children and young people aged 12 to 24 years, and their families.

Citing growing incidents of family breakdown, domestic violence and substance abuse, Taldumande’s Nikki Thomas spoke about the high demand for their services stating that: ‘youth homelessness is often less visible than adult homelessness, because young people will often couch surf until alternative beds are available.’

King's birthday honor list | StreetWork

Congrats to Helen Banu, StreetWork’s CEO, on receiving the OAM! Honored for her dedication to supporting at-risk youth & community health

We are pleased to announce that Helen Banu - Streetwork's CEO - has been awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division of the King’s Birthday Honour List. Her recognition is well deserved. Helen generously gives her time, energy, and intellect to support a cause she cares deeply about - vulnerable young people. Helen was recognised for her services to youth and community health. She has been Streetwork’s CEO since 2013 and, during that time, has passionately advocated and worked with the belief that at-risk youth require support and mentors, rather than incarceration and criticism. From all the team at Streetwork, congrats Helen! #turningyounglivesaroundtogetherwithhelenbanuandjanevincent#orderofaustralia#westandforyouth#youthcharity#youthmentoringprogram#breakthecycle#orderofaustralia

IT'S RECONCILIATION WEEK | StreetWork

It’s Reconciliation Week. Let’s honor history & build a future that values Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultures. Read the Uluru Statement today.

The dates are the same every year - 27 May to 3 June. These dates mark two milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision.

We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation. Together we can build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples', histories, cultures, and futures.

If you haven't had the opportunity, the Uluru Statement from the Heart is an important read.

It invites Australians to walk together to build a better future. https://rb.gy/bxh6m

KEEPING OUR YOUNG PEOPLE SAFE | StreetWork

6 in 10 Australians experience childhood maltreatment. Let’s make child safety a priority. Read the ACMS report & advocate for change.

To thrive, children and young people need to feel a sense of connection, belonging, and safety.

However, the results of the recent Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS) show that approximately 6 out of 10 Australians have experienced maltreatment as a child, and at least half of these are experiencing ongoing mental health challenges as a result.

This new evidence, written for the layperson, is a call to action for us all to make child abuse a national priority. Visit the ACMS website - https://www.acms.au/ - to read the sobering report and to access resources you can share to advocate for the safety and well-being of our children and youth.
