We are looking for 2-3 skilled and committed individuals who can contribute their professional expertise to strengthen our governance, risk management and organisational accountability, supporting Streetwork to deliver its mission sustainably and effectively.

About the opportunity

As a member of the Governance & Risk Subcommittee, you will work collaboratively with fellow subcommittee members and the Board to provide oversight, advice and recommendations on matters including:

  • Governance frameworks, policies and compliance obligations.

  • Enterprise risk management, risk assessment and mitigation strategies.

  • Organisational policies, delegations and internal controls.

  • Regulatory compliance, legal obligations and relevant charity governance standards.

  • Risk oversight relating to safeguarding, work health and safety, and organisational reputation.

  • Governance reviews, continuous improvement and emerging risks.

About you

We are seeking an individual with relevant senior-level professional experience and a strong interest in supporting the not-for-profit sector.

You will ideally bring experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Corporate governance, board or subcommittee experience.

  • Risk management, compliance, audit or assurance.

  • Legal, regulatory or company secretarial functions.

  • Enterprise risk frameworks, policy development or internal controls.

  • Governance within a charity, community organisation or other purpose-driven organisation.

You will bring sound judgement, analytical thinking, attention to detail and the ability to provide constructive, independent advice. You will also value collaboration, confidentiality and the importance of good governance in achieving positive social outcomes.

What’s involved?

This is a voluntary position offering an opportunity to apply your professional expertise to a meaningful community purpose. The role involves attending scheduled subcommittee meetings, reviewing relevant papers and contributing to discussions and recommendations for the Board.

The expected time commitment, meeting schedule and appointment arrangements will be discussed with shortlisted applicants.

vOLUNTEER - JUSTICE ADVOCATE

Streetwork offers a free Justice Advocacy program for young people aged 12-18 years old whose parents/carers are unable to support them. Contact with the police may be evidence of other risky life choices, being present in a time of need, and this gives Streetwork an opportunity to offer support and engage with at-risk’ young people.

Justice Advocacy volunteers respond to after-hours phone calls from police where a ‘responsible adult’ is required to support a young person who is detained in custody.

Streetwork currently offers this service to young people who have been detained at Chatswood, Dee Why, Manly, Hornsby, Gladesville, and Ryde Police stations. (see note on additional requirements)

Justice Advocacy volunteers are placed on a monthly roster, depending on availability. Calls are received on a central number that is forwarded to the volunteer who is rostered ‘on-duty’.

Justice Advocacy volunteers must attend training (usually 2 hours) and complete a Working With Children Check (WWCC) before commencing this volunteer role. On-going professional development opportunities are offered to all Justice Advocacy volunteers several times a year both in virtual and face-to-face format.

VOLUNTEER - LOCAL TEAM MEMBER - RAISING AWARENESS AND FUNDS - STREETWORK

Our three local community based volunteer teams (Lower North Shore, Upper North Shore & Northern Beaches) meet monthly to coordinate activities and you'll also have one or two conversations with potential supporters each month.

We are looking for well connected and active locals who ...

  • want to have a direct impact on the plight of local vulnerable young people

  • want to work with a local organisation that's been successfully helping vulnerable young people on the North Shore for 45 years

  • want to play a regular role in a local team and serve their community over a long period (> 6 months)

  • have strong local networks and the ability to successfully leverage those connections to build our supporter base

  • are able to advocate for vulnerable young people and the services that Streetwork provides in the local community

Please note there is no opportunity with this role to work directly with the vulnerable young people we support.

STREETWORK’S VOLUNTEERING ROLES - WHICH TYPE BEST SUITS YOU?

Streetwork relies on its team of volunteers and supporters to help us achieve our mission - turning vulnerable young lives around.  

The majority of the young people in our program have experienced poverty, abuse, neglect, and homelessness. All struggle to control the risk-taking behaviours threatening their safety and future well-being.

The amazing group of people who volunteer at Streetwork selflessly contributes their time, skills, services, and money to ensure we can continue offering our free mentoring program to vulnerable 12 - 18-year-olds living in local communities.

Volunteering at Streetwork can take many forms, including:  

Traditional long-term volunteering: regular and recurring volunteering on a specific date and time.  At Streetwork, our long-term volunteers assist, which may consist of:

Working with young people opportunities

  • Assertive Outreach (BBQ, activities, general helpers) - Working with Children Check (WWCC) will be required

  • Advocacy (Support person when young person detained at Police station) - Working with Children Check (WWCC) will be required

Administrative and support role opportunities

  • Administration tasks (assist at our head office)

  • Local Board Member (assist with local promotion, local fundraising and local engagement strategies; Local Boards covering North Shore, Northern Beaches and Hornsby-Ku-ring-gai)

Episodic volunteering involves volunteering for a specific project or event. At Streetwork, this includes coordinating an event at a fundraiser, which may consist of:

  • Glam and Grunge event (usually held in October)

  • Supporters Breakfast (usually held in June)

  • Christmas dinner (usually held in December)

  • Christmas wrapping stall (held in December)

Virtual and remote volunteering: tasks performed at home and/or online.  At Streetwork, this means working at a time that suits you and helping us execute a specific task like researching to create a database of local journalists and media contacts. 

Micro volunteering: a commitment to achieving a single, small task.  At Streetwork, this could be copy-checking our newsletter content for typographical errors.  

Skilled volunteering: performing a task that requires technical skills backed by an individual's experience and expertise.  At Streetwork, this could be copywriting, graphic design, creating and uploading social media posts, or assisting with an IT project.

Professional volunteering: individuals or companies donate their time to perform professional services that require certification or formal qualifications. At Streetwork, an example would be offering legal or IT advice or analysing data sets.

Strategic leadership volunteering: creating and/or executing strategy.  At Streetwork, this includes volunteering on a local board or advising our head office team on our approach to corporate partnerships or government relations.
