Volunteer - NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ROLE: Governance and risk or philanthropy and influencing expertise
KEY FUNCTIONS
Streetwork Australia seeks to appoint non-executive director(s).
The role requires attending approximately 10 Board Meetings annually, which are held after business hours and ensuring that reading and preparation for the Board papers is undertaken.
Serving on at least one Board Governance Subcommittee and/or strategic pillar annually and actively contributing to completing agreed actions.
The role will require further involvement in reaching the Board fundraising target, attend fundraising and networking meetings and other events, as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA
ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA
Demonstrated senior-level skills in one of the following priority areas (essential)
Governance and Risk Expertise and willingness to Chair the Board Governance and Risk (Sub)Committee (GRC) – High Priority
Philanthropy and Influencing Expertise and willingness to Chair the Philanthropy and Influencing (Sub)Committee (PIC) – High Priority
Demonstrated experience in at least one of the below priority areas (essential)
Lived experience of young people affected by crime, risk of homelessness, school disengagement and/or harm related to drug use, mental health, at risk of suicide or self-harm. issues or experience as a family member or support person of someone with those issues – High Priority
Being of a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse or First Nations community, or experience working with these communities – High Priority
Young people (18-30 years) are encouraged to apply for this role – Medium Priority
Business/Commercial Expertise – Medium Priority
Knowledge of the responsibilities of a Non-Executive Director, including an understanding of the legal, ethical, fiduciary, and financial responsibilities of Board members – Medium Priority
Experience as a Board Director, member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, or similar, or other related for-purpose organisational experience - Medium Priority
HIGHLY DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERTISE
Strategic expertise – the ability to review the strategy through constructive questioning and suggestions, and contribute to the effective decision-making of the Board.
Accounting and finance – the ability to read and comprehend the company’s accounts, financial material presented to the Board.
For-Purpose knowledge – experience in similar NFP organisations.
A passion and strong interest in the issues affecting vulnerable young people.
Expertise in improving cultural diversity.
Lived experience advocacy or professional expertise working with vulnerable young people
COMPETENCIES AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
Integrity – fulfilling a director’s duties and responsibilities, acting ethically, appropriate independence, putting the organisation’s interests before personal interests.
Collaborative yet curious and courageous – a director must be able to function as an effective team member but also must have the curiosity to ask questions and the courage to persist in robust discussions with management and fellow board members where required.
Emotional intelligence - self-awareness and self-management; a director needs to demonstrate empathy manifested through strong interpersonal skills. A director must work well in a group, listen well, be tactful, yet communicate a clear, candid viewpoint.
Commercial judgement and instinct – a director needs to demonstrate good business instinct and acumen and be able to assimilate and synthesis complex information.
Active contribution - a director needs to be an active contributor with a genuine interest in the company and its work with vulnerable young people.

PRE-APPOINTMENT CHECKS
All successful applicants will be required to obtain a Working with Children's Check (WWCC) before becoming a Streetwork Australia Board Director.
